selective, systemic herbicide
RADIATE is a selective, systemic herbicide, acting through leaves, roots and cut surfaces, for the control of most woody plants, in grazing and conservation areas and on non-crop land. It is absorbed rapidly by the roots and leaves and translocated both upwards and downwards throughout the plant.
Radiate poisons plants by mimicking the essential plant growth hormone indoleacetic acid. This interferes with protein synthesis in the targeted weed so that it becomes unable to create new tissues, leading to the abnormally rapid growth of the plant which results in death. It does not have this same effect on grasses which makes it selective and will not kill the surrounding grass plants.
Due to its persistence in the environment, it may be preferable to apply Radiate directly to vegetation (using a low-volume knapsack, foliar or cut-stump treatment) instead of using a broadcast spray method. It is degraded slowly in soil and water mainly by microbes and has very little tendency to accumulate in aquatic life.
The half-life of Radiate ranges from 167 to 513 days and doesn’t decompose easily which means it persists within the plant tissue to finish the job of killing its target.
Radiate can be sprayed on foliage, injected into plants or applied to cut surfaces. Radiate is fully systemic, meaning that once the active ingredient is absorbed by the foliage, stem, or roots, the active ingredient is transported throughout the plant.
It is very effective as a localised foliar spray application on bluegum coppice, Dichapetalum cymosum (Poison leaf), Vachelia tortillis (Umbrella thorn), Dichrostachys cinerea (Sickle bush) but is not selective so will also kill or damage surrounding trees and shrubs when used in this way.
Effective as cut stump treatment on Colophospermum mopane (Mopane), Dichrostachys cinerea (Sickle bush), Acacia mearnsii (Black wattle) and several others, are some of many species which are very effectively controlled by Radiate.
Use Radiate only on actively growing plants, up to 2 metres in height, with full leaf cover and don’t spray if it is likely to rain within 3 hours of application. Radiate is a very good option for quick results where there is already some grass cover since the existing grasses will be given a new lease on life and new grasses will start establishing quickly. The moisture which gets released by the roots of the dead plants also helps the remaining valuable plants.
