Non-selective imidazoline herbicide
Arborex is a non-selective imidazolinone herbicide used for the control of a broad range of weeds including terrestrial broadleaved woody species. Arborex is absorbed quickly through plant tissue including stubborn cut stumps and can be taken up by roots very effectively.
It controls and stops plant growth by preventing the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids which are essential to plant functioning. Without this plants cannot survive and so Arborex is a very useful tool in a woody weed control program. There is no know resistance from listed weeds to the active ingredient in Arborex!
The half-life of Arborex ranges from one to five months and doesn’t decompose easily which means it persists within the plant tissue to finish the job of killing its target.
Arborex is not highly toxic to birds and mammals and also has a low toxicity to fish. The fact that it is applied to a very small plant part means the chances of it polluting the environment or harming any off-target plants or animals is miniscule.
Because Arborex can affect a wide range of plants and can remain bio-available, care must be taken during application to prevent accidental contact with non-target species.
It is very effective as a foliar spray application on Bluegum (Eucalyptus grandis) coppice but is not selective so will also kill surrounding grasses when used in this way.
Arborex is degraded in soils primarily by microbial metabolism. As stated above, the fact that it is not applied to soil means that it persists within the woody weed until death of the weed. As the stems and roots decompose, the imazapyr is released and begins to decompose in a bacteria rich environment.
Due to its persistence in the environment, it may be preferable to apply Arborex directly to vegetation (using a low-volume knapsack, foliar or cut-stump treatment instead of using a broadcast spray method. Effective as cut stump treatment of Eucalyptus species (grandis, macarthurii, maculata, paniculata), Bugweed (Solanum mauritianum), Lantana (Lantana camara) and Grey Poplar (Populus canescens) are some of many species which are very effectively controlled by Arborex.
Arborex comes with an effective and bright red pigment in the formulation for spray marking / visibility when applying the product and so that applicators can clearly see which plants have been sprayed and which still require treatment. This enhances the efficiency of the operation and avoid wastage.
Rain two hours after application should not reduce efficacy due to the high quality formulation and adjuvants used.
